The teacher and her students,...

2003: My "whiz kid" dulcimer student, Nick Gregg, backed up on guitar by his teacher.  Nick started playing when he was 10; here, he'd just graduated high school.  And boy, can he play!  (photo by Sarah Gregg) 2002: The  Sore Fingers Summer School diatonic autoharp class, performing in concert(!) at Kingham, England.  My, how studious they look!! 2004: with Joanne and Charlie Johnson, dulcimer snowbirds from SW Florida.

Charming, alarming blue-eyed
Minstrel who on harped instruments
Winged her way into our hearts.
Softly spoken, a real token of
Musical talent and hard work that
Expresses, impresses and delights
All those who hear the sounds
Appearing from her within-ness--Lucille.

Robyn Gray, a one-time wannabe opera singer from Australia turned enthusiastic arts patron in the US, read this poem during my performance at the Arizona Folklore Preserve in April, 2000.  She left this earth in September of that year.  As one of my encouragers and fans, Robyn is greatly missed, but fondly remembered here.

Bonding with "The Southern Belles" autoharp class: On our final evening, we each placed specially chosen dried herbs for each of us into this bowl.  We mixed them together and bagged them into sachets to take home.  Scents-ible music! The annual "Christmas" celebration (on August 25) at the Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming USA.  I still have the perfect face for radio.  (Click here for more photos of Yellowstone!)

...a tune for a special friend,...

Les Raber (1911-2000) caught my eye immediately at the Original Dulcimer Players Club Funfest in Evart MI my first year there in 1990.  I never saw anyone make a bow breathe like Les could.  In 1999, I composed Les Raber's Jig (below left) in his honor and played it on the Funfest stage to a crowd of thousands on my F diatonic autoharp, with variations.  The ending is very reminiscent of Les.  This jig was also my final competition tune to clinch the title of 2003 International Autoharp Champion!

...and remembrances of a new home

In 2000, I took a "sabbatical" from full-time music to work in and explore the wonders of the World's First National Park, Yellowstone, in Wyoming USA.  With fond memories of hard work, great fun, and 170 miles hiked in a 5 1/2 month season, Yellowstone quickly became home.  (By the way, 2004 is the Old Faithful Inn's centennial year; try to get to the Park any time from now through mid-October to help celebrate if you can!)

Art by fire: I was intrigued by the burn patterns in this tree trunk charred by the 1988 fires and still standing in 2000.  Location: Lewis Lake Trail, a few miles north of  Yellowstone's South Entrance. (photo by Lucille Reilly) The "wildlife" gets interesting at night?  Here is the night security team of the 2000 "Faithful Dead" crew: L to R: Terry, Mike, Cindy, Jeffery, and (seated) Dave. (Like, would you buy a used car from these folks?)  The "forest" in the background is functional log decoration inside the Old Faithful Inn, hand-selected by architect Robert Reamer in 1904. As dispatch for the "Faithful Dead", here I am at 3am, happily (really!) pre- blocking rooms for the next day's arriving guests. Lunching high atop Mt. Washburn (10,243 ft.) on a windy day in late July.  (Winter arrived five weeks later!)  Also present but undetectable in this photo: ladybugs all over my boots!
(photo taken with my camera by a unnamed hiker from Alaska!)

The sun sets on Dubois, Wyoming on the way home from Yellowstone.
